Emerging label Meks takes on familiar trends with its capsule collection ‘Cynosure’

Emerging menswear labels in Nigeria are a dime a dozen. A new one seems to be popping up every time you turn on your computer and check your favorite fashion website (we hope yours is T.O.S). Which is why when we find a label that stands out, we’re quick to laud it, or at least give it the kind of attention intriguing work demands. Emerging Menswear label Meks (a contraction of the words ‘Made For Kings), intrigues us.

The label describes itself as a ‘bespoke’ menswear label, and we’ve spoken at length about the routes that Nigerian menswear labels follow on their way to finding an aesthetic. Meks seems to be following this formula, right down to releasing capsule collections as a way to gauge consumer response before it commits fully to a full on collection. The label just put out campaign images for it’s debut collection ‘Cynosure’

“A collection is inspired by the architecture of the immediate surrounding of the brand’s creative director who is an avid reader. His surrounding boasts of the best of nature and beautifully painted structures that makes it a CYNOSURE to behold.”

Meks talks a good game, and has the tailoring to match. It also draws heavily from the aesthetics of pre-existing brands like T.I Nathan, P.O.C. Lagos and Onwuchekwa BCD, and melds them into its own thing. Even the label’s set reminds of early T.I Nathan editorials. But the label is savvy enough to make it look like an homage rather than outright copying. But this is an oversight that can only  be overlooked once. Meks will have to really bring the originality with its next collection.
