Look book: Marianne Fassler SS16 is unashamedly maximalist

South African label Marianne Fassler’s resort 2015 collection reads like scenes out of a steampunk novel. The model, Hauwa Dauda of Ice Models Johannesburg (the same agency Nigerian Model Toyin Oyeneye is signed to) gleams like burnished wood, her hair teased into a conical crown, her feet shod in striped platform sandals.

Taking inspiration from the diversity of South Africa, Fassler’s collection speaks to a large swath of women; with pieces like a black asymmetrical crinoline blouse piped with black taffeta worn over wide leg crinoline pants that would sit right at home draped on the most edgy of Nollywood screen goddesses, in the same collection with an almost violent print made of dappled paint drops crafted into a halter neck jumpsuit, with pants lined with lemon Bazin.
According to the creative director of the brand Lezanne Viviers, “The collection underlines comfort, exoticism, relaxation and the brand’s unapologetic approach to maximalism and represents the self-assured Fassler women.

The collection definitely is completely averse to minimalism. Even the simplest pieces done in black are detailed with giant appliqued flowers, Viviers goes big with every detail in the collection, the colours, the volume on the pieces, the styling, but somehow it all comes together, giving the distinct image of a woman who is inspite of the chaoes around and on her, completely self aware.
