Bathroom Elegance: Renovation Tips for the Old Bathroom

Bathrooms are sacred, and should be able to address both the physical and spiritual needs of the homeowner. When one has stayed in a house for long, sometimes lifestyle changes might necessitate bathroom renovations. Renovating the bathroom is one of the most difficult things, because there often is no going back after making a decision.

One normally has to consider both structural and aesthetic factors, and cannot add or remove too much, especially when space is an issue. There is also the issue of the resale value of the house, and how the bathroom will affect it. All this might seem overwhelming, but in the end, the bottom line should be having the bathroom molded into the image of the owner. Looking for inspiration? Here are some helpful ideas;

Fixtures

The fixtures in the bathroom should not be custom and ordinary, but should be elegant and stand out. Visiting the bathroom at home should feel like an experience unique only to one’s home. Fixture elegance is one of the ways to achieve this. Instead of the normal blocky bathroom vanities that are a fixture in most bathrooms, have a pedestal sink with graceful lines. This is especially suitable for a small bathroom. It will be kind on the hips when moving around, and still look good. The tub could be different; a claw foot tub is an idea here.

Bathtub

The bathtub is a huge fixture in most bathrooms, and most of the time, there will be a bathtub big enough to fit even in the small spaces in the bathroom. Still, it does not hurt to test them out. Most people only think about where the tub will go, never taking themselves into account. Before investing in a tub, it does not hurt to sit in one and confirm the size. For most people 60 feet is enough. However, it is not always that tub shopping is for the one person. When looking for tab for two, make sure it slants at the edges and has taps in the middle. Whatever the case, make sure it has enough wiggle room and a secure foothold.

Flooring

It will likely take some time before one can invest, or even stand the inconvenience of a bathroom renovation. Also, the bathroom is a high traffic area in the house, and with the water spills, there is need for durable flooring. The most durable flooring options are marble, ceramic and stone. Those who need warmth for these might want to consider sub-floor heating systems. Hardwood floors when well-sealed can also provide natural warmth when used in the bathroom.

Mirror

A mirror is a must in the bathroom, but nobody said it had to be flat. One stylish mirror placed over the sink can do wonders. Mirrors give the illusion of space, and while this could mean having many mirrors in the bathroom for some, having a single perfectly styled one might just do the job. To find a middle ground, consider having one big enough to be used by two, instead of having many mirrors strewn all over the room.
