First Look: Day One of SA Mens Fashion Week 2016

The South African Mens Fashion Week (SA Mens FW) is in full swing right now, with nearly 40 designers showing their visions for Fall fashion in 2016. Captured by fashion photographer, Tope Horpload, these are our first looks at day one, which includes Nigerian designer and part of our contingent to the 2016 International Fashion Showcase in London, Babatunde Oyeyemi’s Maxivive.

From what we see the trends are outerwear, slanted colours and an emphasis on volume. What do you guys think?

Andriaan Kuiters And Jody Paulsen
Andriaan Kuiters And Jody Paulsen.

Design duo Kuiters and Paulsen lean heavily towards prints and exaggerated silhouettes for fall, capitalizing on the culottes trend that has overtaken women’s fashion. We are all for crossover fashion.

Black Dog
Black Dog.

Black dog is all muted blacks and understated greys. They dabble in the nautical trend but don’t commit. Ultimately it is everything good about Ed Hardy, stripped of all its gaudiness.

SA Mens
Dicker.

Dicker reimagines the classic sweatshirt, playing with volumes (skin tight, chunky, bell sleeved) and occasionally splash colour to brighten things up, most definitely for the fashion for the slopes.

Martin Kadinda
Martin Kadinda.

Shades of yellow over at Martin Kadinda, and the way the label uses stripes to update the men’s trench is so interesting, a quick favorite.

Maxivive
Maxivive.

This is easily Maxivive’s best collection. Oyeyemi leaves all the weird silhouettes behind and lets the tailoring do all the talking. Also Maxivive accessories are the best thing since sliced bread.

Nao Serati
Nao Serati.

Nao Serati takes another womenswear trend for a spin. His take on wide leg pants shoots past palazzo all the way into other territory, it is interesting to see how that will translate into real world style. Also his oversize jackets are everything.

Pilgrims Clothing
Pilgrims Clothing.

Pilgrims clothing takes its name literally and offers a collection that will appeal to blipsters, nomads and the fashion savvy. His fold collar trench coats are the truth.

We are also glad to see Seun Logan who we profiled on our TOS Fifty list getting his debut at SA Mens alongside veterans Toyin Oyeneye and Kwen Akomaye. Familiar faces are always welcome. If this is day one, we wonder what marvels await us as the days go by.
