Kelvin Godson takes on Vanskere’s Signore Fusion’s “Possible Conversations”

There is a bit of conventional wisdom you gain while writing extensively about fashion and creative work in general; the more convoluted the title of the work and the explanation of the work is, the more pedestrian it will be. Menswear label Vanskere is proving to be an exception to that rule with it’s new collection Signore Fusion’s “Possible Conversations”. This hard to comprehend collection name actually has a fairly simplistic explanation. The label is joining the ranks of Nigerian design labels looking for new clients in new markets and launching it’s diffusion line ‘Signore Fusion’. Not that we’ve seen anything to prove that diffusion lines will be any more successful here than they have been everywhere else that the idea has been implemented, but we knock it till it’s been tried.

“The focus was to maintain a Possible Conversation that reflected a cohesive aesthetic sensibility with a twist between both labels that are significantly related but have no discernible causal connection.”

The collection called “Possible Conversations” aims to explore on the silence and reserve of Vanskere, while introducing a new silhouette constructed on the idea of texture and design.

This is the inspiration that the label’s creative director Evans Akere cites for debut collection from their diffusion line and what a line it is. Styled by Tosin Ogundadegbe of the Style Infidel, the idea of the editorial takes us behind the scenes of a shoot, showing off the canvas background. The pieces themselves do not stray very far from what we know of Vanskere, the tunics and kaftans that we have come to expect of the brand make an appearance, as well as more youthful slouchy jumpsuits and capri pants. It is also a pleasant surprise to see Akere work with satin. However the choice of ultra-tight pants for the models is a gamble that doesn’t pay off. Perhaps it’s the fit, but their proportions are terribly off, distorting their silhouettes and making the pieces undesirable.

We can only watch now and see if Signore Fusion ends up paying off for Vanskere.
