We lament all the time how there are not nearly enough high fashion editorials that exclusively feature and promote the beauty and versatility of Nigerian designers, so when we come across them, we literally fall over ourselves to rave about them, and the new Today’s Woman (TW) editorial with top model, Uju Marshall and face of the season, Olamide Ogundele has us seriously raving.
Working with in-demand stylist, Fav Ologu and ace photographer, Emmanuel Arewa of Spotlight P.I (who has worked extensively with Tosin Ogundadegbe for some of our favourite editorials) for a fresh perspective, TW tries to find a healthy union between heavily Afrocentric fashion and western couture, tapping design labels, Mademoiselle Aglaia and Weizdhurm Franklyn to provide the editorial’s signature looks.
Elaborate exaggerated headwraps done in distinctive African inspired print wax provide a contrast to the sleek, tailored and fringed looks and the raffia props on the set help ground the editorial firmly in Africa.
Olamide Ogundele really holds her own against Uju Marshall and together, they are the true soul of the editorial, bringing the professionalism needed to pull off such a difficult idea.
This is truly one of the better executed editorials, and just maybe it is time we paid more attention to TW as more than just another women’s lifestyle glossy.
