If you follow the new generation of Ghanaian designers then you obviously know about Papa Oppong. The young designer and graduate of the University of Radford, has created quite the niche for himself with his high profile collaborations with Vlisco Ghana, Mac Ghana and Swarovski Ghana.
His Spring 2015 collection ‘A celebration of Art’ featured hand painted floral illustrations from some of Ghana’s most respected artists and earned him a residency at the prestigious DC Fashion incubator programme alongside Nigerian designer, Tsemaye Binitie.
But the designer is also known for his very distinctive illustrations which have earned him many celebrity fans, including Rosario Dawson, Rihanna and Beyonce. In recent times his art has moved away from celebrity fashion portraiture into more self expressive art. As more people are turned to his work, Oppong has sought out new ways to engage these fans, working on a portfolio website www.papaoppongillustrations.com and his very own Youtube channel.
He has already put up his very first video, detailing the work process for one of his recent illustrations.
The video shows his work process and how he creates his distinct illustrating style. Great if you’re an aspiring illustrator. We found it pretty awesome. See the video here.
