South Africa Fashion Week: Lumin brings the artisanal knits for AW17

To see handmade knits on any African runway is always a delight, especially when it’s done right, and done in a way that is pleasing but fashion forward. When it is done by emerging women’s wear brand Lumin, it is an utter delight.

This is Lumin’s second turn at the South Africa Fashion Week showcase and the design duo behind the brand Amy and James bring their multicultural heritage into their art and design aesthetic, merging East Asian cultures with South Africa’s expansive history. The new collection is built around exaggerated knits and complex knitting techniques to create texture and volume. The vibe is decidedly demure, the silhouettes classic. This is a collection that will meld seamlessly into most wardrobes.

Where the duo really shine is in technique. A mix of fabrics help provide much needed textural detail and hold the attention long after the first glance. Quilted jackets, sleek tuxedo style blazers and gathered full skirted dresses are all on display. And the knits, serve simultaneously as detail and centre piece. A glorious knit dress with drag detailing sits pretty on a model, but also works as a bolero style jacket on another. The other options include a button up sweater and a geometric neck piece.

There aren’t enough pieces in this Lumin collection to fully sate our craving for their unique take on demure, minimalist fashion, but it is obvious that Lumin is going places.
