Nigerian Menswear brand St. Morgan just released editorial images for it’s Ready To Wear 2016 look book. In the official statement the brand released via Instagram, the creative director states.
“Bush Man is inspired by the uncivilized. He’s the most contented person in his own world. He has no crime,no rule,no law, no police, judges, rulers or bosses. He believes that the gods put only good and useful things on earth for him to use.”
The collection builds on the brand’s last collection, exploring silhouettes and designs drawn from the indigenous menswear dress, particularly Igbo and Yoruba cultures, updating them for today, working in elements of layers and complex embroidery into the brightly coloured pieces. There is also a hint of casualness about the clothes, as though they were made for a man who was largely unfussy about what he wears. He also dabbles in sportswear inspired clothing, with sweat shirt/pant combinations, oversized colour blocked shirts and piped pants.
If there is any flaw with the new St. Morgan collection, it is that the collection plays too safe to be truly interesting. There are no leaps of faith, no cuts that made us sit up and take notice. And while that is somewhat hard to do in menswear, it isn’t completely impossible.
