I love getting box braids done, and so eighty percent of the time my hair is done up in braids. I’m also very easily bored and constantly want to change the colour, size and style, the only problem with this is that I hate salons.
My friend studying abroad who shares the same love for braids and hate for salons -probably because it’s so expensive there- suggested I get my braids done myself. She made it sound easy enough, recommended a couple of YouTube tutorials and told me I’ll be fine with a little practice.
It had taken her only a couple of tries to get the hang of it, and since I was usually good with my hands I figured it would be a walk in the park. The wahala started when I tried to draw the attachment out the way I had seen hairdresser’s do it. A couple of hours later, with half of the attachment ruined so bad I had to put it in the bin, I was finally ready to start. I think I really need to complain at this point, about how deceptively easy YouTube tutorials make everything seem.
Anyway I tried for several hours a day, to get it right but no matter how patient I was, or how carefully I followed the tutorials I just couldn’t get the braids to look good enough. I tried off and on for a couple of weeks, till I finally gave up and went to a proper hairdresser.
So the question I have for the ladies who manage to get their box braids done themselves is how on earth do you guys do it?
