If you have followed Nigerian fashion and beauty trends over the last two years, then you’ve had no choice but to acknowledge the almost phenomenal rise of chanteuse Yemi Alade as a creative genius and style icon. Pushing a style that is decidedly African with a cosmopolitan bent, Alade is also the first Nigerian pop star to collaborate with a Nigerian accessories label on a licensed collection, the Bland2Glam Yemi Alade collection. A huge deal considering very few musicians have been offered this exact opportunity.
But Yemi Alade is taking her wide fanbase, her distinctive style and successful fashion collaboration and mashing them up into a new project; a fashion brand called House of Tangerine. House of Tangerine has existed in some iteration since 2012, and has been responsible for many of Yemi Alade’s styling decisions and costumes, but with this revamp, Alade is legitimising the brand by properly introducing it to the wider fashion community at the 2016 Africa Fashion and Design Week.
Alade will be one of the bigger acts at the event this year, simply on the merit of her personal brand, and while the Yemi Alade Collection in collaboration with Bland2Glam sometimes veered into costume-y territory, we expect this new collection to truly show us a new side of Yemi Alade. We only have 8 days to wait.
