Many Nigerian labels exist completely independent of everything we’ve come to recognize as ‘organized fashion’, flying under the radar of the more established fashion circuits, serving a small but dedicated client base. Some partly because they’re simply unaware of the opportunities available to them, and others because entering into the fray of organized fashion with its cycles and expectation can be draining and expensive, especially for boutique labels usually owned and operated by a single person. Abuja based women’s wear label Evve’s Room is one of those labels, working behind the scenes for the last few years, honing it’s aesthetic and improving its craft.
The label has chosen, unexpectedly to change tack with a proper debut collection and editorial for ‘Evve’s Woman’. The collection draws heavily from Northern Nigerian cultural norms of modesty and style. Because of this, the label circumvents many of the season’s huge trends; off shoulder dresses/blouses, cutouts and sheer inserts, focusing instead on prints and contrast prints. Maxi-dresses, collared shirt dresses and kaftans as well as a gorgeous cropped peplumed shacket with midi sleeves are the some of the ways the label chooses to celebrate this aesthetic.
However the label’s decision to use a wide variety of heavily patterned fabric works to its detriment, reading as a lack of cohesion and while the label has decent tailoring, it doesn’t offer much by way of innovative design or even interesting or original concepts. Perhaps the label might want to take this collection as a sounding board, cull the pieces that do not make the cut and craft a more cohesive collection around what does.
