Emerging Ghanaian design house, House of Paon has debuted its Fall 2016 Menswear offering themed ‘The New Age Man’. The label which released a womenswear line earlier in the year, has defined it’s aesthetic through agendered clothing with most of the collection’s defining features coming from the designer’s choice of fabric.
Femininity, or at least the idea of it is celebrated in this collection which features pieces made from see through chiffon and lace, often emblazoned and juxtaposed with floral fabric, tying this collection to the womenswear line’s latest collection which was heavy on lace. Volume is the main tool the label uses to translate it’s ideas of androgyny, offering boxy blouson coats in brightly coloured zig-zag prints that stand rigidly on the model’s body. Collarless, with oversized sleeves and an absence of fastenings, the Paon coats could easily become a staple in the wardrobes of the more demure, offering a way to spruce up wardrobes.
The rest of the collection offers a counterpoint to this almost military silhouette, kimonos done in lush cotton patterned with a jacquard weave drapes on the model’s body, sheer shirts contrasted with floral print panels, expose and conceal, almost vulgar in it’s celebration of barely veiled nudity.
Either way, the House of Paon AW16 is not for a man afraid to draw attention to himself.
