Abaya Lagos, Salihat Rahaman’s premier luxury modest fashion brand is pushing it’s new Ready To Wear ’16 collection with a an editorial campaign. As we see modest fashion gain ground among the Muslim elite, fashion houses like Abaya Lagos and House of Kaya will become even more relevant.
The collection’s main sell is rich, textured embroidery used to elevate the amorphous silhouettes that define modest fashion. Rahman takes her brand’s name Abaya, an Arabic word for cloak, very seriously. Rahman makes sure to note that each piece is handmade to “give an added feel of elegance and luxury to it.” She settles for regal colours; ruby red, royal blue, a dark velvety chocolate for her cloaks, focusing all her design work on the layering and embroidery of the cloaks, kaftans and turbans.
To create a collection of separates that allow the Muslim woman interested in fashion the flexibility to change her look drastically with a single piece is Rahman’s ultimate goal with the Desert Bloom collection and she manages that quite well. A pair of over-sized jackets done in chocolate velvet and black cashmere jazzed up with intricate gold leaf embroidery best illustrates the elan this collection can lend a wearer. In her words;
“This gives me the utmost comfort and confidence.We want customers from different backgrounds to feel comfortable wearing AbayaLagos merchandise regardless of cultural or religious ties.”
