If you’ve wondered how Nigerian female celebrities – Toke Makinwa, Stephanie Coker and recently, Tiwa Savage have been nailing red carpet looks these days, then you may be missing out on the name, Gert-Johan Coetzee.
In February 2016 when The September Standard sat with the South African designer in an exclusive interview, he had yet to penetrate the Nigerian market. It was his fire collaborations with South African media personality, Bonang Matheba that got our attention. At the time, he had styled her in hundreds of outfits and she had unarguably become every girl’s dream princess.
Gert-Johan Coetzee whose clientele includes two of the most stylish women on the international scene – Kourtney Kardashian and Kelly Rowland – has now become the Nigerian celebrity favourite.
We recall Tiwa Savage’s joy when she first met him. “You turned me into a princess“, she exclaimed in her Instagram caption, and that perfectly captures Coetzee’s biggest strength – turning beautiful women into enchanting characters like those from Disney.

From Stephanie Coker’s elegant looks on The Voice Nigeria to Toke Makinwa’s breathtaking, yellow princess gown that obviously took a cue from Beauty and the Beast character, Belle, Gert-Johan Coetzee has successfully made the boldest statement in the Nigerian fashion scene. And truth is, he is unrivalled at the moment.
Cap that with his showstopping outing at the just concluded Heineken Lagos and Fashion Design Week. His collection featured a lot of sheer, ruffles, feathers and the star details that could hardly be ignored on most of the pieces.
Not only does Coetzee win in the red carpet fashion space, his bridal couture line is a wonder to behold too. South African presenter, Minnie Dlamini recently got married in his custom-made, Swarovski-laden piece that had jaws dropping.
