In August 2017, Nigerian-born model, Mayowa Nicholas announced she would be making her Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show debut this year. She was set to be the second Nigerian that would walk the Victoria’s Secret runway after Oluchi Orlandi’s 2014 appearance.
When the VS Fashion Show held in Shanghai on Monday night, we all looked forward to see her do Nigeria and everyone who looks up to her proud but the 19-year-old was conspicuously absent from the show.
Mayowa Nicholas was listed to be one of the six new black models – Aiden Curtiss, Alecia Morais, Grace Bol, Amilna Estevão, Samille Bermannelli – who would grace the runway but she was the only one who was no show.
As there were hardly any clues anywhere as to what may have gone wrong, Vogue Spain has come close to providing an answer. Mayowa Nicholas was listed by the site as one of the five models who were unable to obtain visas to travel to China. The others are Russians and Ukrainians, and there were speculations that relations between China and Russia may have affected the visa process.
That hardly applies to Mayowa Nicholas but we hope we will get an explanation for her absence soon enough.
We already gave you 10 reasons why she deserves to walk the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show and we’re undeterred by her absence. We trust that we will be seeing more of Mayowa Nicholas as she kills more runways next year.
