Nhlanhla Nciza, one half of the hit South African music duo Mafikizolo is known just as much for her eccentric style as she is for her music. So it is not all that surprising that like many other African pop stars she is delving into fashion. What is surprising though is the kind of fashion. Nciza has NN Vintage, a line that replicates vintage styles and silhouettes and updates them for the 21st century.
We don’t know the extent of Nhlanhla’s creative control on the label, if it is merely a licensing deal or if she actively involved in every part of the process, much like Nigeria’s Genevieve Nnaji, but we like the level of authenticity and attention to detail in the collection. The six look editorial features fit and flare dresses with zig-zag prints in neon colours reminiscent of Twiggy in the 60’s. Gypsy collars, lime stripes and cape blouses fill out the rest of the collection. It’s a little sparse and we hope she releases a more comprehensive collection in the future.
