We’re not quite over the euphoria of South Africa Menswear Week and the amazing work that was shown over the four day period. But now we dont have to, because Ghana is taking on the challenge of bringing West Africa’s first exclusive menswear fashion week.
Menswear has gained serious prominence in the last two decades as international designers began to feed the style craze which celebrity and the narcissism of social media brought to mens fashion. Fashion and designer labels suddenly became acceptable social currency, just the way financial independence and autonomy used to be. As more designers delved into menswear, it became pertinent to create a fashion calendar that catered specifically to the guys.
Accra’s men Fashion and accessories week is themed ‘Fashion Forward Man’ and organized by Fame Model Management. Slated for the 27th and 28th of February 2016, the two day event will hold at the World Trade Centre in Accra. With a Business Of Fashion seminar on the 27th of February in the works for industry upstarts and veterans to discuss how to advance menswear in Ghana and Africa as whole and parse out the issues limiting the industry’s growth, Accra Menswear Week is more than just ritzy clothes and chiselled frames.
Accra menswear week will also have a ‘Mens Gallery’, a designed exhibition space similar to LFDW’s exhibition space as well as evening runway shows. From a cursory glance at the Menswear week digital presence, (it’s website doesn’t work and its Facebook hasn’t been updated since February 6th), something may be off. Neither the sponsors nor participating designers have been announced yet and this gives us some serious pause. Hopefully this is just a case of delayed communication that is unfortunately, common place in West Africa.
