Vlisco, the Dutch textile manufacturer has made quite the impact in African fashion with African inspired Hollandais and print wax iterations. But in the last few years, we have seen the powerhouse push for the transition from everyday wear to high fashion with specialised collection with prints that are inspired by specific times and collaborative efforts with the Vanguard of African fashion. Vlisco Ghana took it one step further with their collaborative collections with four of Ghana’s biggest designers.
We covered a few months ago, the first product of these collaborations, one with Stylista Ghana. ‘Woven Wisdon’ had a lot of asymmetrical cuts and played heavily on the mismatched prints trend that seized the nation at the time.
The second of the collections just got debuted with Ghanaian ready-to-wear women’s brand,Poqua Poqu.
Where Stylista is heavy on the structure, Poqua Poqu takes a different, more visual approach to it’s collaboration with Vlisco, playing up the prints used for the collection and allowing the prints determine symmetry, hem lines and construction.
The effect is a collection more steeped in fantasy with glamorous capes and slanted skirt hems. Poqua Poqu’s interpretation of the off shoulder trend is inspired and the flouncy peplums and gathering works beautifully with the prints. This collection is a firm favourite.
“The collection is an impressive fusion of soft curves and geometric patterns that create a characteristic 3D effect. We are especially excited about the prints we worked with as they feature bright, bold and vibrant colors as well as shapes that make a true statement.”
The ‘Vlisco x Poqua Poqu: the Capsule Collection’ was released on 10th June 2016 at the Vlisco Boutique in Accra Mall.
The collection will be displayed on mannequins throughout the Vlisco Boutique from 10th June to August 2016 and customers who are captivated by the designs are invited to work with Poqua Poqu to re-create the styles in customized outfits tailored to their needs
