At long last, Here’s the editorial for Akpos Okudu’s Spring 16 ‘Wanderlust’ collection.

It’s taken almost nine months, but finally, finally we get that much anticipated second look at Port Harcourt based designer Akpos Okudu’s spring 16 collection debuted at the 2015 Lagos Fashion and Design Week. Okudu’s collection was one of the more whimsical lines of the year, done almost entirely in shades of pink and heavily embellished with intricate bead work, the closest we came to a bespoke couture collection that Spring.

But it wasn’t perfect. There were of course the murmurs around the famed/infamous Giambattista-esque gown the label showed that bore strong similarities to the french house’s couture offering, right down the massive ruffled ombre skirt that starts as blush pink and transitions down to a deep red. Christian Siriano had a dress near identical to this one that season too, so it was a free for all.

The fascinating thing is that a few months down the line, the quality and complexity of the work keeps this collection fresh  and the colour palette ensures it still stands out. The choice to put so many delicate pieces on the runway finally defined the Akpos Okudu aesthetic, and set her apart as an evening wear/bridal designer. And lord knows we need more of those.

Definitely still one of our best collections of 2015.
