It isn’t very often that you see a collection that moves you, that can hold and keep your attention by sheer force of will, especially in Nigeria where the pressure to break even financially and rush to satisfy a niche market of luxury consumers has many of our premium and high street labels churning out clones of each other. For us, the new #KMTheLabel collection from luxury women’s wear collection Kareema Mak does just that.
The label’s last collection, chock full of bright metallic prints and cigarette pants (a huge trend in 2015) was heavily influenced by trends and didn’t quite give an unfiltered first impression of what the brand was truly about.
This new collection is thankfully shed of all that external clutter. Simple silhouettes dominate the collection, perfectly cut, excellently tailored to fit the female form. Even when the label obliges this season’s mega trend; off-shoulder blouses/dresses, it is subtle, and accent isn’t the defining aesthetic.
The ten piece collection is split into three acts, a floral accented third, white lace dresses and flouncy blouses, a second act with a cleaner, darker sophisticat with sheer lace jumpsuits and dresses, and a geometric third with asymmetric frills and a geometric peplum.
The label focuses heavily on separates, a decision that greatly increases the practicality of the collection. This pragmatism, and the succinctness of the collection tell us Kareema Mak will be here for years and years to come. We will watch them with bated breath.
