A lot of us ladies spend a supposedly ridiculous amount of money buying weaves, but just how ridiculous is it? Is all the money we spend on weaves actually worth it? For me, the answer is a yes. However according to my brother, I have never been able to justify spending about fifty thousand naira on “just” hair. And whenever I tell another person who isn’t into weaves, I can’t help but feel a little silly.
The first time I bought a weave that wasn’t synthetic or in the same category as “Chocolate”, I felt absolutely ridiculous. It was fresh off the Christmas holidays, and there had been an endless flow of rather generous guests at my parents’ house the whole holiday. So I gathered most of the money I got, and bought my first Brazillian weave. Now I have no idea if these weaves are really from Brazil (most likely not), or if they are even really off people’s heads, but for someone who had been experimenting with all forms of weaves for years, I could immediately see the difference.
Immediately after paying for it, I began to fantasize about a dozen other more important things I should have used the money on, and I did that constantly for weeks. I was completely guilt ridden, and the only time I didn’t feel bad about it was when I was running a comb through my luxurious (faux) mane, or staring at it in a mirror. The guilt passed after a couple of weeks, but the hair shone on. It’s been four years and I still have that weave. It has been cut, dyed, straightened and curled multiple times and it still looks pretty good.
I spent about fifty thousand naira on the weave then and used it off and on over a period of four years, my math might be bad but I’m pretty sure I got my money’s worth. So if you can afford the splurge, although in my opinion it’s a need if you are really into weaves, invest in human hair extensions, you’ll definitely get your money’s worth.
Getting a good dealer is important because there are so many people selling rubbish, so be careful not to dole out serious cash to someone in return for “Chocolate”. I’m currently in between dealers (yes that’s what we call them), but I’m putting together a list of dealers who supply good and most importantly, fairly priced hair. If you guys have any suggestions please let me know below.
